What is Somatic Experiencing?
Sound Therapies
The tānpura is an Indian instrument that activates theta brainwaves and can induce deep relaxation and a meditative state. Listening to the tānpura can help reduce anxiety, insomnia, and help illicit a deep connection to our highest self.
Gongs can help us move into a deep relaxed state by activating theta brainwaves.
These crystal bowls are tuned to the different notes and frequencies that our cakras (pronounced chakras) vibrate to. We have seven major cakras that influence us in different ways when in and out of balance. This meditation uses seven crystal bowls (one for each cakra) in order for us to harmonize and balance each of these energy centers. Crystal bowl meditation also increases theta brainwaves and has shown to decrease anxiety and improve mood (Goldsby et al., 2017). Vagus Nerve and Chanting
Researchers found that the vibrations from AUM chanting stimulate the vagus nerve. Activation of this nerve, sends neurotransmitters and electrical signals that have shown to reduce activity to areas of the brain like the amygdala. The amygdala is associated with the flight/fight/freeze response. In addition, the vibration causes an increase oxygenation of the blood and induces feelings of relaxation through activation of the parasympathetic nervous system (Bangalore. Et al., 2011).
AUM chanting has shown limbic deactivation. Similar observations have been recorded with vagus nerve stimulation treatment used in depression. Click below to read articles showing this research.
